چکیده

a r t i c l e i n f o a b s t r a c t Keywords: CUORICINO Muons Cosmic rays Double beta decay Neutrinos To better understand the contribution of cosmic ray muons to the CUORICINO background, 10 plastic scintillator detectors were installed at the CUORICINO site and operated during the final 3 months of the experiment. From these measurements, an upper limit of 0.0021 counts/(keV kg yr) (95% CL) was obtained on the cosmic ray-induced background in the neutrinoless double beta decay region of interest. The measurements were also compared to GEANT4 simulations.

Muon-Induced Neutrons Do Not Explain the DAMA Data.

We present an accurate model of the muon-induced background in the DAMA/LIBRA experiment. Our work challenges proposed mechanisms which seek to explain the observed DAMA signal modulation with muon-induced backgrounds. Muon generation and transport are performed using the MUSIC/MUSUN code, and subsequent interactions in the vicinity of the DAMA detector cavern are simulated with Geant4. We esti...

Measuring the Cosmic Ray Muon-Induced Fast Neutron Spectrum by (n,p) Isotope Production Reactions in Underground Detectors

While cosmic ray muons themselves are relatively easy to veto in underground detectors, their interactions with nuclei create more insidious backgrounds via: (i) the decays of long-lived isotopes produced by muon-induced spallation reactions inside the detector, (ii) spallation reactions initiated by fast muon-induced neutrons entering from outside the detector, and (iii) nuclear recoils initia...

Backgrounds in Neutrino Appearance Signal at MiniBooNE

The MiniBooNE (Booster Neutrino Experiment) experiment is a precise search for neutrino oscillations but is crucially sensitive to background processes that would mimic an oscillation signal. The background sources include intrinsic νe from kaon and muon decays, mis-identified π , gammas from radiative delta decays, and muon neutrino events mis-identified as electrons. A summary of these backgr...

Further developments in the CUORICINO experiment

We report the present results of the CUORICINO experiment, a cryogenic experiment on neutrinoless Double Beta Decay (DBD) of Te consisting of an array of 62 TeO2 crystals with a total active mass of 40:7 kg. The array is framed inside a dilution refrigerator, heavily shielded against environmental radioactivity and high-energy neutrons, and it is operated at a temperature of 8 mK in the Gran Sa...

Cryogenic Double Beta Decay Experiments: CUORE and CUORICINO

Cryogenic bolometers, with their excellent energy resolution, flexibility in material, and availability in high purity, are excellent detectors for the search for neutrinoless double beta decay. Kilogram-size single crystals of TeO2 are utilized in CUORICINO for an array with a total detector mass of 40.7 kg. CUORICINO currently sets the most stringent limit on the halflife of Te of T 1/2 ≥ 2.4...
